Our First 40 years…
The family-owned-and-operated business was started in Birdsboro in the Spring of 1971. Paul Levengood Sr., better knows as Skip, strongly believed that he could provide better service than he had experienced at local tire shops. Skip and his original partner opened the doors as C&J Tire, naming their store after their wives, Carol and Judy, or "C" and "J." For more than three decades, until she retired in 2011, Judy worked alongside her husband, keeping the business afloat during its tumultuous early periods.
In the early days, when the store was small but gaining decent business, Skip received a startling customer complaint that revealed his partner had developed some of the bad habits of other local shops. Knowing the business couldn't survive with a split personality when it comes to customer service, Skip knew he had to buyout his partner. It took every dollar that Skip and Judy had, but at least they would own the business themselves. Skip wanted to operate "HIS WAY OR NO WAY."
To make ends meet, Skip was working full-time at the Firestone manufacturing plant in Pottstown and picked up shifts working part-time as a bouncer at a local night club. On weekends and the occasional night off, he and Judy worked on managing the tire inventory, paying the bills and balancing their books.
In 1973 Skip gave up his job at the Firestone plant and immersed himself into C&J Tire full-time. By the end of 1974, the store celebrated its first year "In The Black." For the next seventeen years, C&J grew and became the local market leader in tires and automotive services.
In 1991, the name C&J Tire evolved into CJ's Tire & Automotive Services. That same year, Skip opened a second location in West Lawn, that was followed by two locations: New Holland in 1993 and Lititz in 1994. From just four employees in 1971, CJ's now has more than 200 full- and part-time devoted sales associates, tire and automotive technicians, managers and administrative staff. CJ's has developed into a thriving entity.
"Our formula is really pretty simple," explains Paul Levengood Jr., Skip's son, who is currently running the day-to-day business operations. "Taking care of the customer, hiring people with very high morals and treating both customers and employees like they are family is what we are all about. Tires are a commodity, so it's up to us to show our customers how and why we're different. That's why we emphasize that 'it's not about who is right, it's about what is right.'"
